Curling Forward: Ice & Clubhouse Renewal Project – Ensuring Reliable Ice and Welcoming Spaces for the Next Generation of Curlers.
Project Description
The Glanford Curling Club (GCC), operating in Mount Hope, Ontario since 1894, is undertaking a $265,000 project to upgrade its aging ice-making system and clubhouse facilities. The project addresses critical equipment needs, including replacement of the chiller, and dehumidification systems, which are essential for producing high-quality, consistent ice throughout the curling season.
In addition, the project will improve clubhouse safety, accessibility, and comfort, including painting, carpeting, and audio/visual systems. These upgrades will enhance the experience for over 200 curlers, support youth and adult programs, and enable GCC to host leagues, clinics, and tournaments.
By ensuring reliable facilities and a welcoming environment, this project will strengthen GCC's role in promoting amateur curling, fostering athlete development, and sustaining community engagement, contributing to the growth of the sport at local, regional, and national levels.

How this project will assist in promoting
or developing amateur sport on a national
level.
The Glanford Curling Club (GCC) plays a vital role in supporting and advancing amateur curling in Canada; a sport deeply rooted in the country's heritage and community identity. By upgrading its aging ice-making system and improving its clubhouse facilities, GCC will strengthen its capacity to deliver high-quality programming and expand participation across all age groups and skill levels.
These improvements will directly contribute to the promotion and development of amateur sport at a national level in the following ways:
Enhancing Accessibility and Participation
Reliable, high-quality ice and modern facilities will enable GCC to continue offering affordable, community-based curling programs. This ensures that people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can participate in the sport. Increasing participation at the grassroots level directly supports Curling Canada's national objective of growing the sport across the country.
Supporting Athlete Development Pathways
GCC serves as an important local training ground where new and developing athletes gain foundational skills through programs like Learn to Curl, Junior Curling, and Little Rocks. With upgraded facilities, the club will be better positioned to host skill development clinics, junior competitions, and interclub events that prepare athletes for regional, provincial, and eventually national competitions.
Expanding Competitive Opportunities
With reliable ice conditions and improved facilities, GCC will be able to host more bonspiels, league play, and regional tournaments. These events attract participants from across Ontario and beyond, fostering interprovincial engagement and promoting curling as a lifelong amateur sport.
Sustaining Volunteer and Community Engagement
Amateur sport in Canada depends on volunteerism and community spirit. A safe, comfortable, and welcoming facility will encourage continued volunteer involvement and attract new participants; essential elements for sustaining amateur sport at every level.
Preserving and Growing Canada's Curling Heritage
As one of Ontario's oldest continuously operating curling clubs, GCC plays a key role in preserving the history and traditions of curling while modernizing its facilities for future generations. Strengthening the club's infrastructure ensures that this cornerstone of amateur sport continues to thrive as part of Canada's broader curling network.
In summary, this project will not only secure the future of curling in the Hamilton and Haldimand regions but will also contribute to Canada's national amateur sport system by fostering participation, athlete development, and community engagement in one of the country's most iconic winter sports.
