This project continues the Oakville Curling Club's (the Club) ongoing mission to foster opportunity, inclusivity, diversity and the history of the sport of curling through it's community involvement. These murals will remind members and the many visitors to the Club the role that curling and local clubs represent to local communities such as Oakville.
How this project will assist in promoting
or developing amateur sport on a national
level.
The Oakville Curling Club is one of Ontario's better known curling clubs. With its near 1000-strong members, the Club is home to:
- a large 'Learn-to-Curl' summer and regular season program that introduce people to the sport
- a vibrant summer curling program running from August to October that includes youth camps, high performance competitions, and leagues open to any participants from across Southern Ontario.
- a regular season running from from October to April that not only includes youth and league curling but also:
- a Special Olympics program for youth and adults with learning and physical disabilities
- weekly high school physical education classes and athletics programs
- rental & instructor availability for anyone wishing to try the sport
The Club continues to host numerous events & bonspiels as part of its philanthropic efforts to help raise funds for charities. These include events such as the World Lefthanders Championship, Sportsman and the Kurl4Kids Charity Bonspiel in support of such groups as the Oakville Hospital Foundation and the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
These murals both reflect and remind Club members and visitors the role that curling and local clubs play fostering opportunity, diversity, inclusivity and philanthropy within communities such as Oakville and beyond.
